Try Champions Are Readers

Alumnae and Pi Phi Friends alike are invited to join as we conduct our annual Champions Are Readers (CAR) - program this Fall, mentoring four classes of second graders in reading.

This is a four week program with a total of eight sessions or shifts. CAR reading tutors will work with the students of Greenbriar Elelmentary on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Volunteers often choose one of those days and attends that day each of the four weeks. Each shift is around a 2 hour commitment and is an excellent way to fulfill volunteer hours, yet with the short schedule, the time commitment reasonable!

Volunteers read with one student at a time and with multiple students per shift. Generally, the students read to the volunteer to strengthen their reading skills, with guidance and support from the volunteer.

We welcome you, whether you can do only one or all of the eight shifts. The celebration of reading at the end of the program is an additional opportunity too.

The finalized dates for 2024 are Thursdays, September 5, 12, 26 and October 3, Tuesdays September 10, 17, 24 and October 1 and shifts will take place 12:05 to 1:45. The reading celebration is scheduled for the afternoon of October 4.
