Is Literacy Volunteering for You? Try Champions Are Readers

Alumnae and Pi Phi Friends alike are invited to join as we conduct our annual Champions Are Readers (CAR) - program this Fall, mentoring four classes of second graders in reading.

This is a four week program with a total of eight sessions or shifts. While not finalized, we will likely run CAR on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Volunteers often choose one of those days and attends that day each of the four weeks. Each shift is around 2 hours, so this is an excellent way to fulfill volunteer hours, yet keeping the time commitment reasonable!

Volunteers read with one student at a time and with multiple students per shift. Generally, the students read to the volunteer to strengthen their reading skills, with guidance and support from the volunteer.

We welcome you, even if you can only do one of eight shifts or even part of a shift. If you would like to help only with the celebration of reading at the end of the program, that is an option too.

The finalized dates and times of our shifts will be available by mid August. Likely we will conduct the program starting Tuesday, September 12 and shifts will take place in the morning. This would date the reading celebration for the afternoon of October 6, the day before Fall Break begins.

To sign up, get in touch with CAR Chair Sarah Roberts.
